Fun with the Fam!

Family Photo
(Mike, Sandy, Scott & Lacy)
Mom and Dad relaxing at the most photographed spot in Brugge after their canal tour.

Ah, Paris! This was Mom's first time to Europe.

The Chateau we stayed at in France while traveling from Paris to Normandy.

We were able to be at the American Cemetery over Memorial Day Weekend. U.S and French flags we placed at every cross commemorating this day. Several crosses had flowers placed at them where the family members had either sent them or came to visit. If a family member came to see a specific cross then sand was placed over the name to highlight the cross.

Off to Amsterdam with the fam next weekend.

Birthday Trip to Scotland

Even though it rains a lot in Scotland you still have gorgeous views!
The Rosslyn Chapel on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
Rolling Hills, Fences of Stone.....Scotland at its best.
I've never seen so many sheep in my life! Every field has a flock of sheep.
Scott and the Scottish Bagpiper!
We decided to get away for a quick trip for my birthday. There is a ferry/cruise-liner that leaves from the port of Zeebrugge (which is about 15 minutes from our house) that goes to Scotland and back. The best thing about this cruise liner is that you can bring your car onto the ship. We enjoyed having our car with us because everything so spread a part in Scotland. In our short time there we managed to fit it:
  • Rosslyn Chapel - think DaVinci Code
  • Edinburgh - very small, quaint city that happens to have a Hard Rock Cafe and a castle.
  • St. Andrews - It's the original home of golf so Scott had a great time.
  • A walk (or as the brochure says : Dry Slope Skiing) through the Pentland Hills to see the scenic part of Scotland.
  • A visit to the local grocery store which had American Food! (Highlight of my trip!)

I know Chicago is known as the windy city....and I thought Dublin was very windy....but Scotland takes the cake on this. I think every where we went we had gale force winds. Winds strong enough to knock Scott off his feet. I can barely walk on a normal day so I was all over the place! We had good weather though. It only rained in the mornings and late evenings so we had afternoons filled with sunshine.

Hotels are pretty pricey in Edinburgh so we decided to stay in a bed & breakfast for our stay there. We were both skeptical at first but ended up loving it. Margaret and Quin Dunlop at the Carlethan House were wonderful hosts! They were about 8 miles out of Edinburgh in this little town of Lasswade. We really enjoyed staying outside of the city b/c we had a better feel of the beauty of Scotland. Plus, we were able to leave our car at their house and take the bus into the city. Don't forget - they drive on the other side of the road in Scotland! Scott did an excellent job driving. We were both much more relaxed than when we drove to London last year!

Scotland also had wonderful food. Every meal we had was excellent! We are hoping to go back to Scotland to see Glasgow and the Loch Ness. But, we were very satisfied with what we saw this trip. We wanted a nice and relaxing trip and that's what we got!

Weird things have been happening....

I haven't had a Dakota sighting since I wrote about it last October so I figured I'd write about more weird things that have been happening in hopes that they would stop.

I guess to preface these incidents I should tell you that when Shannon came out, we went around the house and took photos of each room and then looked at them on the computer to make sure there were no white/bright spots (it's suppose to indicate a presence, from what Sylvia Brown says on Montel.) I'm not a believer in that sort of thing but for the sake of having fun, I tried it.

The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors were clear. No spots. Now onto the cellar...Shannon had to basically push me down it to go in it. It's divided into about 5 sections and then inside the 5th sections is a secret door which Scott told me about (I'd never looked in it) But, on this dark, gloomy, rainy and cloudy day, Shannon and I opened the door and snapped a picture. For some reason we looked at the picture right after we took it. Rays of bright light...every where on the picture. Please note, I did say it was rainy, cloudy, gloomy and dark outside and the light inside the cellar is only in the stairwell..far away. So, where did that light come from? From that point on I thought I "released" the ghost. Ok, onto the more recent stories:

A few weeks back I came down to make breakfast one morning about 6:45 and the right burner of the stove was on low. Very, very odd since I am slightly obsessive compulsive about making sure the stove is off for fear of fire. The night before I remember cleaning the stove which means the burners were off. We have one of the flat top stoves so it had to be cooled off before I cleaned it or I would have burned myself. Scott thought I might have hit the knob while I was cleaning, but I remember checking it before we went upstairs for the night. Just to prove that's not what happened, I acted like I was cleaning the stove and bumped the knob and it didn't move. You actually have to put pressure on the knob to turn it. I know without a doubt I turned off the stove the night before. Did the ghost not want me cooking anymore?

We just bought a bench to go with our kitchen table. I put all of the place settings out since our table now seats 8 instead of 6. I went over to the napkin drawer to get the two extra napkins and the extra two napkins were not there. I had just seen them a few weeks before! (Please try for a moment not to think I'm crazy and give me the benefit of the doubt) I've spent the last year organizing our entire house getting rid of all of our junk and making sure everything has a specific space. The napkins go in the napkin drawer with the rest of the linen napkins. The extra napkin rings were in there but no napkins. Your probably saying I only bought 6. NO! I had 8! I originally had 4, then my mother-in-law shipped me 2 more and I bought 2 more. A total of 8. I searched the entire buffet..no napkins. I searched the entire house like a crazy woman....no napkins. Scott quickly reminded me that it was probably the ghost.

I swear, I'm not crazy! But, of course....it would only happen to me!

We're off to Scotland on Wednesday night since it's a Belgium holiday Thursday and Friday. The ghosts have the house to themselves.

Oh, please don't let this discourage anyone from coming to visit us. Weird things only happen to me. As Sylvia Brown would say, " You are the one who released it."

Cinco De Mayo

We decided to have our own Cinco de Mayo feast on Saturday night. Quesadillas, Chips and Salsa and Margaritas. If I had to guess....we were the only people in Brugge who celebrated May 5th.

We often ask ourselves, Where is home? My "home" was my first home on Thornton Dr. in Albany, GA where I lived for 20 years. Scott's "home" was his childhood home on Merrill in Roseville, MN. Since our parents no longer live in those homes we had to choose a new place to call home. Our first house together on Oxwell Dr. in Duluth, GA became "home"worthy right when we were selling it. We've been pretty much "home"less for a year and decided that the old saying is true:
Home is where the heart is!

With that being said, we spent all weekend and a few hundred euro later to make our house to more like a home. We (ok, I was more the assistant) installed 18 light fixtures, 5 framed pictures, and 1 mirror. We have three more pictures to hang (I'm picking them up from the framing shop this week) and 3 more light fixtures to hang (once we go to Ikea on Saturday).

Below is a picture of Scott on the ladder to give you a since of how high are ceilings are.

One of our 18 fixtures was a ceiling fan in our bedroom. I'll write it again and this time try and feel our excitement - A CEILING FAN! Ceiling fans are rare in Belgium and we found a cheap one!

Scott and I would personally like to thank our Dad's for a few things we've taken for granted over the years. INSTALLING CEILING FANS, DRILLING ANYTHING, and ELECTRICAL WORK!

We successfully installed the ceiling fan after 3 LONG hours and a lot of team work later. I remember my Dad putting these things up by himself. My Dad has installed a lot of fans, washing machines, hung a lot of pictures, curtains, etc for me over the years and Scott's Dad has installed fans, garage door openers, etc. I'm sure we said "thank you" at the time but now we're really saying it - THANK YOU! It really made us appreciate the things you did when we had to do it ourselves. Thanks Dad! We hope we made you proud.

I've been tagged!

Danielle tagged me to play a game of "random meme" and here are the rules: each player starts with 7 random facts/habits about themselves. People who are tagged need to write on their own blog about their seven things, as well as these rules. You're also supposed to tag 7 people.

1) I have food rules. Here's one for example: No more than 3 ingredients in a dish. If your going to go over 3 ingredients, I must be able to pick a few ingredients out and eat them separately.

2) I was Homecoming Queen in college. Wow, that was 7 years ago.

3) I'm clumsy. I will trip over thin air and fall down stairs regularly.

4) I LOVE info-commercials and their products. I could watch them for hours and order whatever they are selling. I'm a marketing person's dream.

5) I was the best sno-cone maker in Albany, GA. I worked at the local Sno-Biz from age 15 to 18. Grape is still my favorite.

6) I'm allergic to Artificial Sweeteners such as Aspartame and Phenylalanine. That means no diet drinks or sugar free stuff for me. I'll get a massive headache from one sip.

7) I steal the covers in bed...poor Scott.
